Several airlines in Asia have attempted to improve the rice dishes served to business and first class passengers since the majority of meal complaints are about rice. All Nippon and Cathay Pacific have built expensive onboard cookers, Lufthansa consulted three famous Japanese chefs, Ansett resorted to covering the rice with cabbage leaves in order to retain moisture, and Japan Airlines flies the rice in from Japan.

JAL, others expand routes abroad in an effort to survive competition

Japan Airlines (JAL) offers thrice a week nonstop services from Tokyo to Dallas/Fort Worth, TX, starting Mar 15, 1999 as part of the company's expanded international routes. It is also the result of an aviation agreement between between the US and Japan which granted JAL and Northwest Airlines more access on their airports. In terms of JAL's economic performance, it was compelled to reduce its rates due to the competition provided by other domestic carriers. It also consolidated with the operations of American Airlines for code-sharing.
