SATELLITE PHONES EXPECTED IN INDIAN VILLAGES
Article Abstract:
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has signed a pact with Inmarsat, a global communications co-operative. Under the agreement thousands of satellite telephones will be installed in the remote Indian villages. Inmarsaat has already set up 13 experimental telephones in the past few months to test their performance. DoT is considering the Inmarsaat telephones for villages that are over 25 km away from the normal telephone linkages. Inmarsaat charges around $3,000 per telephone line and then 35 cents per minute for phone calls. The costs are expected to be subsidised to enable the users to pay less. About 50 percent of India's 650,000 villages have no telephone connections.(ag)
