SEARLE REGISTERS 43% FALL IN NET PROFIT

Searle (India) Ltd of the RPG group has shown a decrease of 43 percent in net profit to Rs4.60 crore in 1997-98 (Rs8.11 crore in 1996-97). It declared a total income of Rs223.73 crore (Rs206.30 crore) and a gross profit of Rs10.64 crore (Rs9.49 crore). Its depreciation increased to Rs5.54 crore (Rs71 lakh). The company has announced a 22 percent dividend for 1997-98. Its agrochemicals business was adversely affected by the severe cyclones in Andhra Pradesh and its impact on the cotton crop. The company has tied-up with global majors like Cytozyme and Griffin of the US for nine agrochemical products. It plans to produce high-value anti-cancer and vitamin bulk drugs. (khr)

PONDY OXIDES NET PROFIT UP 105%

Pondy Oxides and Chemicals Ltd has increased its net profit by 105 percent to Rs1.49 crore in 1997-98 against Rs72.76 lakh in 1996-97. Its sales turnover increased by 35 percent to Rs22.96 crore from Rs16.98 crore. The company plans to set up a unit to produce liquid stabilisers, epoxy oil and paint driers in Tamil Nadu. It has already acquired land and building at the Maraimalainagar industrial estate for the purpose and will install machinery in June 1998. It invested Rs25 lakh to acquire land and building at Pondicherry to set up its second PVC stabilisers unit. This will increase its PVC stabiliser production to 1.2 lakh tonnes per month. (khr)

NOVARTIS HIKES DIVIDEND TO 40%

The dividend payout of Novartis India, formed by the merger of the life sciences divisions of Hindustan Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz India, has been enhanced from 32 percent in 1996-97 to 40 percent for 1997-98. The net profit of the company rose by 106 percent to Rs38.2 crore (Rs18.6 crore in 1996-97) on a turnover of Rs663 crore (Rs607 crore). Borrowings and interest costs declined to Rs9.6 crore (Rs17.2 crore) due to lower working capital levels and optimal financial arrangements. (gsh)
