VSNL INCREASES CAPACITY ON INSAT 2E
Article Abstract:
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) has created additional capacity for satellite broadcasters to uplink from India by leasing seven transponders on the new Insat-2E APR-1 satellite. The rental costs of broadcasters will be reduced by about 50 percent as the satellite permits at least two analogue channels to be compressed on a single transponder. The rental cost per channel is expected to decrease to $800,000 per channel annually compared to $1.2 million on a normal transponder. VSNL has said that it will undertake a Rs300 crore upgradation programme to increase its antenna network and create a digital infrastructure for satellite signals. (khr)

M&M's GREENFIELD FOUNDRY PUT ON HOLD
Article Abstract:
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has postponed its Rs200 crore foundry project due to the slowdown in the automobile sector. The company is instead thinking of acquiring an existing unit and upgrading its facilities. The project was to have been set up at Baramati with an installed capacity of 50,000 tonnes of speciality castings. The castings were to have been for the company's multi- utility vehicle project Scorpio. M&M had entered into a technical tie-up with Montgron of Spain for the foundry project. Sources say that the company has already spent Rs16 crore on the project, of which Rs5 crore may not be recoverable. (khr)
