PAINTS INDUSTRY - DERIVED DEMAND
Article Abstract:
The Rs39 billion paint industry in India consists of decorative paints (70 percent) segment and industrial paints (30 percent) segment. In the decorative paints segment, medium and economy sectors have a major market share due to the cheaper prices. The industrial paints market is smaller due to the under- developed white goods and automobile sectors. The fastest growing segments in this sector are powder coatings, automobile coatings and high performance coatings. Around 67 percent of the overall paints market is accounted for by the organised sector comprising 8 companies. The unorganised sector is mostly concentrated in the decorative paints segment as industrial paints manufacturing needs costlier technology. By the year 2000, the industrial paints sector is expected to grow by 50 percent compared to that of the decorative paints. The total demand for paints is expected to grow by 10-12 percent per annum in the next few years. (gsh)
