SPAIN: PEUGEOT AIMS TO INCREASE MARKET SHARE

Peugeot, French carmaker, considers Spain an important market, accounting for about one tenth of global sales, according to the managing director, Mr. Schantz. Schantz says that Spain is an especially dynamic, competitive market which still has a lot of potential. Peugeot hopes to develop the commercial vehicle market as well as the private vehicle market. In 2001 it anticipates sales of 190,000 vehicles, its highest ever in Spain. Since 1998 sales of private vehicles have grown by more than 30%. Nearly 90% of vehicles sold in Spain, where customers want powerful, well-equipped safe, comfortable, high quality, attractive vehicles, have air-conditioning. Peugeot is aiming to rank first in the Spanish market. The focus is on the Peugeot 206 and 406, and the new 307, launched in May 2001, of which it aims to sell 70,000 units in 2002.

ALGERIA: COLAITAL MODERNISES

The state-controlled company Colaital, a subsidiary of the Groupment Industriel des Production Laitieres, is going to be modernised. This program concerns mainly the renovation of refrigerated equipment, equipment related to the processing and treating water. The company plans to launch invitations to tender or consultations for the acquisition of this equipment. At the same time, Colaital plans to re-start production of UHT (ultra high temperature) milk in 2002. The company stopped this production after it renovated its installations.

ALGERIA: RENAULT ENHANCES DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
Article Abstract:
The Kangoo and Express models account for 50% of Renault's total sales in Algeria, followed by the 9 and 19 models with 25% of total sales. The Clio model follows with 13%, while Megane, Laguna and Safrane account for less than 5% each. In Algeria, the French car maker expects to build a branch to supply the Algiers. The country's network should be increased at 20 Renault dealers in the end of 2000, and 30 units in the early of 2002.
