STOP PRESS: MEDIA TITANS AT WAR
Article Abstract:
The Hindustan Times (HT) has appointed Mr Deepak Shourie as the newspaper's new executive president. Mr Shourie was formerly the president and publisher of the news magazine Outlook, which he had launched for the Raheja group. Sources say that he has been brought in to fight the intrusion of the Times of India (ToI) into HT's territory. The Audit Bureau of Circulation states that ToI's circulation is 477,000 for January-June 1998. Sources say that HT's circulation has fallen from 545,000 in July-December 1997 to 529,000 in the first half of 1998-99. ToI reduced its price from Rs2.20 to Rs1.50 per paper three years ago and then HT did the same but incurred heavy losses. The advertising rates in ToI are Rs1020 per column cm against HT's Rs1550 per column cm. This has increase ToI's advertising marketshare to 54 percent against 46 percent of HT. (khr)

lack of advertising closes asia magazine
Article Abstract:
Asia Magazine which is jointly owned by South China Morning Post, Singapore's Straits Times, Malaysia's New Straits Times and Thailand's Bangkok Post will stop publication by the end of September 1998. The magazine faced high production cost but advertising revenues dropped continuously. The falling in advertising revenues was due to regional economic downturn and dim prospects in economic turnaround in future. *
