Article Abstract:

According to forecasts by the Kenya Sugar Authority, Kenya is expected to produce 450,000 tonnes of sugar in 1998 for a domestic and industrial sugar 716,455 tonnes, compared with a 401,000 tonnes of sugar in 1997 and a consumption of 580,000 tonnes. The figures for 1999 are 480,000 tonnes for production, and 760,525 tonnes for consumption. In order to make up for the difference between production and consumption, Kenya will import sugar will protecting the local industry, and taxing imports at 70% instead of 20% at present, which will bring the price per tonne of imported sugar up to US$ 702 compared with US$ 601 for local sugar.

Article Abstract:

The Sukala company, which is the only sugar producer in Mali, is planning to renovate its two production units, in order to be able to reduce the price of sugar by FFr 15,000 bringing it down to CFA Fr 268,500 per tonne, and to increase Sukala's sugar production from 26,000 tonnes to 30,000 tonnes in 2001. Three other sugar production units may be built in Mali by a Brazilian company and by the United States company F.C. Shaffer.
