PULSES PRODUCTION MAY TOUCH RECORD 14.8 MT

Article Abstract:

Production of pulses is likely to be 14.8 million tonnes in 1998- 99 (13.1 million tonnes in 1997-98). The total acreage under pulse cultivation has increased to 229.1 lakh hectares (228.5 lakh hectares). Production of pulses in the rabi crop season is estimated at 9.5 million tonnes (8.7 million tonnes). This has contributed to the higher production of pulses in 1998-99. Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are likely to record higher output of pulses and account for 50 percent of total pulse production. (rk) (kvr)

ICRA's ANALYSIS OF THE UNION BUDGET: STEEL LOSES SHEEN

Article Abstract:

The Investment Information & Credit Rating Agency, which has analysed the impact of the Union Budget for 1999-2000 on the steel sector, says that steel companies will face additional burdens due to the increase in freight rates, the one percent increase in incremental excise duty and the additional 3 percent corporate tax. The hike in import duties on flat products will not have any immediate impact on domestic prices as current international steel prices are much below the floor prices imposed on steel imports. (khr)
