Santander boosts profit with asset sales, lending

Santander Central Hispano S.A. of Spain posted fourth quarter net profit increase of 13 percent to 2.65 billion Euros ($3.45 billion) from 2.34 billion Euros last year. Strong revenues were due to increased lending in Spain and Latin America and asset sales. The Spanish bank is one of the largest banks in Europe.

First-quarter net profit for Santander Central Hispano S.A. rose by 21% to reach $2.45 bil, driven by fee income and strong growth in Latin America and in Europe. Net interest income increased by 20%, and revenue by 18%.
