Sasser sees improvement in Beijing-Washington ties

Article Abstract:

The US relationship with China has seen much improvement in recent months, in part due to the efforts of Ambassador James Sasser. A former senator and longtime friend of Pres. Bill Clinton, Sasser has managed to guide ties between the two countries to a new equilibrium using his affable manner and political savvy. He concedes that problems remain in the US-China relationship but he believes that a proactive approach will help to defuse most issues before they become serious impediments to smooth ties between both countries.

China admits selling nuclear-related magnets to Pakistan

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government has admitted US charges that it sold nuclear-related ring magnets to Pakistan. However, Chinese officials contend that the US should not impose sanctions because the magnets sold to Pakistan were not magnetized so they do not fall under the London nuclear-supplier's prohibited list. They also claim that the whole transaction was done without the knowledge and approval of senior government officials.
