The Edinburgh International Festival begun in 1947, has grown into the largest such event in the world, complete with satellite festivals including the Fringe where any performer can do anything. Highlights and a critique of this year's festival, which is the 50th, are presented.

A rough year: the European Community
Article Abstract:
1992 was supposed to be a year in which the march toward European unity took major steps forward. Instead the cause was set back considerably, with the Danish rejection of the Maastricht treaty causing most of the damage.
