Second generation: Stanton Williams' refurbishment of Sir Denys Ladun's Royal National Theatre - which was listed Grade II half-way through the process - aims to 'unlock' the building and upgrade its services without diluting it strong character
Article Abstract:
Stanton Williams architects, have completed the refurbishment of Sir Denys Lasdun's National Theatre. The theatre was listed Grade II halfway through the refurbishment, which meant that English Heritage and Lambeth planners had control over every working detail. There was a need to renew and upgrade services, but the listing meant the any major structural alterations were ruled out. The concrete exterior of the building, which attracted grime, was cleaned, and internally a new box office and bookshop were designed.
