Seeds of discord

Article Abstract:

Cargill Seeds India and other foreign firms are marketing new seeds whose higher yields may enable Indian farmers to end the recent slow-down in agricultural production. However, some farmers fear that the seed firms plan to control India's agricultural gene stock through international patent rules and then to force farmers to pay high prices for the needed seeds. These suspicions prompted farmers in Bangalore, India to ransack Cargill Seeds' office on Dec 29, 1992. Cargill Seeds describes the farmers' fears as baseless and expects a profitable year in 1993 despite the attack.

Cargill Inc, a US agribusiness corporation, has proposed building a new salt-evaporation complex in the Gulf of Kutch, Gujarat state, northwestern India. Cargill hopes that the $25 million plant, to be sited on 6,000 hectares of intertidal land, will generate salt for export to East Asia, will bring in $10 million annually for India and will provide work for 1,500-3,000 people. The Indian government approved the project after Cargill first proposed it in Jul 1992. However, opponents of foreign investment have persuaded local authorities to block the project.
