Seven thousand pardons

Daewoo Motor Co.'s Chief Executive Officer Lee Jong Dae, who was forced to fire 7,000 employees in December 2000 due to Daewoo's insolvency, is asking for forgiveness and trying to find work for his former employees. General Motors Corp. plans to buy Daewoo for approximately $770 million, but may face labor protests if employees in the Daewoo labor union are unsatisfied.

Inchon offers tax breaks

Article Abstract:

The city of Inchon, South Korea, is offering tax breaks to General Motors Corp. should the automobile maker acquire Daewoo Motor Co.'s largest plant, saving as many as 50,000 local jobs. The Daewoo Motor Workers Union, originally strongly opposed to the takeover, is now supporting the idea.
