Sharing Mesopotamias water

Article Abstract:

The Mesopotamian plain lies in Iraq, Syria and Turkey, and there is concern about the impact of Turkey's South-Eastern Anatolia Project on the plain. This project involves 22 dams, and Turkey argues that there is sufficient water left over for land in the south, but there are seasonal and yearly fluctuations, and it may not always be the case that enough water is left for the south. Both Iraq and Syria want Turkey to provide a firmer commitment on how water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers are to be allocated, but neither has sufficient weight to extract such a commitment.
