Britain's Princess Diana aroused political interests in Pakistan and Fleet Street headlines in London with her visit to former cricket star Imran Khan's Pakistan cancer hospital. She defied the British Foreign Office and the royal family, showing her independence as her divorce moves forward, but British diplomats and Prime Minister Benazhi Bhutto of Pakistan studiously avoided her. Khan announced in early 1996 that he will enter politics, and the visit surely helped to boost his profile and political image.

Long, winding road: political reform won't happen overnight

Article Abstract:

Malik Meraj Khalid, Pakistan's caretaker prime minister has been praised for not using the usual political perks, and for reforming the country's bureaucracy. However, the population is looking towards President Farooq Laghari to make real changes in politics and government, although it is uncertain whether Laghari will be able to keep his promise of a general election in February.
