Shopping center's charm buried under Hong Kong streets
Article Abstract:
The poor marketing and unattractive design of the Palace Mall are the reasons behind the shopping center's dismal financial performance. Despite its strategic location, near the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Cultural Center and the Peninsula Hotel, the shopping center failed to lure customers into its stores since its opening in 1997. Half of the retailers spots were unoccupied, while occupants have already put up signs of last day sales. Hopefully, the plan of its operator, Hong Kong Island Development Ltd to spruce up the mall's uninviting design will increase traffic to its stores.

Hong Kong narrows portals; city admits fewer job seekers - yet Singapore opens its arms
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong officials are implementing stricter measures in accepting foreign employees. Noting that the unemployment rate in the city has risen at an unprecedented rate, Hong Kong is becoming choosier with its applicants. This is in contrast with Singapore's policy of encouraging firms to hire foreign employees. Observers are lamenting the fact that employment visas are becoming more difficult to get while more questions are being asked of applicants.
