Silk industry wears thin in China on overproduction

Article Abstract:

Silk has traditionally been one of China's top exports. However, Chinese silk producers are now suffering from a sharp decline in overseas demand for their product. Analysts believe that the Chinese themselves are to blame for the situation. Since the late 1980s, Chinese producers have increased production to the extent that supply has outstripped demand. The problem has been exacerbated by Indian, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Brazilian competitors who, ironically, built their silk industries with the help of Chinese technology.

China and Russia flaunt friendship in warning to U.S

Article Abstract:

Analysts view the 'strategic 21st century partnership' announced by Russia and China as a warning to the US. Both countries have recently been the subject of increasing US pressure over a variety of trade, human-rights and security issues. Although no new economic or military accords were announced, Russian Pres. Boris Yeltsin and Chinese Pres. Jiang Zemin went to extra lengths to demonstrate the growing friendship between their countries.
