SingNet apologizes for virus scanning: effort to quash hackers stirs fears ISP customers may doubt privacy

Article Abstract:

Singaporean Internet service provider SingNet made a public apology for secretly scanning about 200,000 computers. The company explained that the computer scan was performed to trace a virus that enables hackers to decipher and use computer passwords and credit card numbers. It also said that no confidential information was accessed and that it did not ask permission from its customers so as not to alert the hackers. However, SingNet subscribers still suspect hidden motives for the computer scan.
