Article Abstract:

Singapore is negotiating multiple bilateral trade agreements with a broad array of partners, an effort that has served to position the country as a pathway to trade between Southeast Asia and the rest of the world. Although some critics argue that bilateral agreements do not help free trade due to their restrictive nature, others insist that Singapore is on the right path to establishing a regional trade bloc in Asia.

U.S. air cargo carriers are reluctant to place hubs in Hong Kong because government restrictions on the number of foreign carrier flights limit their growth options. Hong Kong's policy of local carrier protection may have significant economic consequences, as the air cargo industry is rapidly globalizing.
