Democratic and economic reforms are slowly happening in Zambia. Pres Frederic Chiluba. Economic reforms have include dropping agricultural subsidies and paying debt owed the World Bank. Democratic reforms have suffered setback do to the lack of any opposition party and crackdowns by the government.

Zambian president Frederick Chiluba was elected because he promised to return his country to democratic rule. However, fearing a coup, he imposed martial law on Mar 4, 1993. The overthrow attempt was real, but Chiluba has overreacted.
