Article Abstract:
According to a recent survey carried out on 2,000 people in Spain by Icea, Spaniards are mainly concerned about their personal risk, even more so than protecting material goods and their home. The things that most concern Spaniards, in order of importance, are: death (47.8%); illness (40.1%), invalidity (34.7%), unemployment (30.0%), accidents (22.3%), traffic accidents (19.7%), home fire, (13.8%), home theft (9%), theft in public (7.5%), family break-up (5%), retirement (5.7%), home flooding (5.3%) and other (6.8%). Around 37%% of Spaniards prefer to take out insurance as a prevision system, while 25% prefer a savings account, 23% hope nothing will occur and 16% use some other system.

According to a survey carried out by the Spanish Centro de Investigaciones Sociologicas (CIS), nearly 14.4% of those asked never or hardly ever read newspapers, 22.2% do so twice or three times a week, and 45.2% read newspapers everyday. General information publications are massively read (92%). Sports journals follow(31.7%), and then business press (9.7%). Nearly 32.1% of those asked never read magazines. Local news are the most interesting ones, followed by national and cultural news. *

According to the Spanish retail banks association Asociacion Espanola de Banca Privada, 101,271 new current accounts were opened in 1997 (+0.90% on 1996). Current accounts opened in national banks increased by 102,118, while those in overseas banks decreased by 240 to 5,312. Banks from EU countries also reduced the number of current accounts by 2.39% to 24,753 (607 clients less). *
