Sorry we asked: Japan's Nagano faces an Olympic burden
Article Abstract:
The Japanese city of Nagano is glum over the approaching 1998 Olympic Winter Games to be held there because the soaring yen will reduce revenues and may discourage visitors. A $278 million share in broadcast rates would have meant 37 billion yen in 1991, but now, only 24.5 billion yen. A dismal economy means only five Japanese sponsors have signed on. Meanwhile, the improved infrastructure Japan is paying for may actually mean that more future visitors will simply make day trips from Tokyo rather than stay overnight.

Indonesian army faces change
Article Abstract:
The social tension in Indonesia has been highlighted by the recent ethnic clashes in Kalimantan. It is uncertain whether the military will re-emerge in an independent role post-Suharto. It will continue in its defence against external aggression and maintain internal security, through the 75 seats it controls in parliament. It could retake the presidency and take political control or form a partnership with the civilian elite and whatever is decided will set the tone for its internal security mission.

The yellow man's burden: Western group wants an undeveloped Cambodia
Article Abstract:
The Society for Ecology and Wildlife Preservation in Cambodia has proposed a $5 billion plan that echoes Pol Pot's apocalyptic and antidemocratic schemes in its desire to avoid development. The society wants Cambodia to forbid most development activities, instead earning tourist dollars through demonstrations of its cultural heritage, such as music and dance. The all-or-nothing nature of the plan seems a more sophisticated form of the colonization once done by force of arms.
