Specifier's choice: Pokesdown Primary School

Article Abstract:

Specifying elements of a new building a long time in advance can create significant problems, according to Format Milton Architects director Neil Armitage. His firm found it difficult to nominate any manufacturers when working on Pokesdown Primary School in Bournemouth, England. His team undertook extensive research before selecting Permarock for the major vertical cladding. The need for the building to be maintenance-free created a number of difficulties. It was decided to use a paint on the metalwork of the external stairways, but Armitage now feels that it would have been better simply to galvanize metals.

Specifier's choice: Centenary Building, University of Salford

Article Abstract:

There were a number of advantages associated with using a management contract for the construction of the Centenary Building at the University of Salford, England, according to architect Stephen Hodder, of architectural firm Hodder Associates. It was possible to make quite clear decisions about materials and products, and work could start on site before the rest of the design had been decided in detail. Hodder Associates modified some standard products to make them better or more interesting, and was able to specify products designed specifically to meet the needs of a building being used by students.

Specifier's choice: Loughborough University business school and economics building

Article Abstract:

Ahrends Burton Koralek (ABK) had to work under difficult conditions in their design of the business school and economics building at Loughborough University, England. The client novated them to a design-build contractor despite originally appointing them directly. This led to compromises on a number of the original specifications for the three-storey arc-shaped building. ABK felt its control over specifications consisted of input on nature and appearance rather than detail. Compromises included a different range of ironmongery and a cheaper method of sun shading.
