Article Abstract:

Many directors feel unwilling to be assertive, believing that assertiveness is closely linked with aggression. They also do not like pointing out the mistakes of others or disagreeing with the ideas of fellow directors. However, assertiveness can actually be very positive, and need not be connected with aggression at all. Properly channelled assertiveness allows a director to become better at delegating, to be a better team player and to cope more effectively with difficult customers and colleagues. Directors should try to develop an assertive posture, but must avoid aggressive confrontation.

Article Abstract:

It is clear that closer links between higher education and commerce are emerging in the UK. Many universities have established firms to assist in the promotion of technology transfer, and academic research is now being converted into commercial activity. The government is now willing to offer seed funding for universities to create prototypes, draw up business plans and protect intellectual property, and the Dept of Trade and Industry's Innovation Unit is investigating what will make long-term partnerships between higher education and business successful.

Dismissal payouts to rise

Article Abstract:

UK business will face 200 million pounds sterling extra costs as a result of changes to the law on unfair dismissal, implemented on October 25 1999. The qualifying period for claims has been reduced to one year's employment from two years' employment and the maximum payment has risen to 50,000 pounds sterling from 12,000 pounds sterling. According to a partner at Nockolds Solicitors (Bishops Stortford, UK), Diana Smillie, there will need to be more care about contracts of employment and procedures.
