Major's policy on a single European currency is correct. It would enable Britain to influence European Union (EU) policy and even lead the EU at times. Despite the correctness of his position, Major's inability to control his party is likely to lose him re-election on May 1, 1997.

Article Abstract:

Great Britain is arguing with opponents in the European Community such as Germany over its rebate for contributions to the EC. The European Commission is eager to push the rebate since it needs Britain's support to get the Maastricht treaty on monetary union signed.

Members of Parliament may be more divided over the Maastricht treaty on European monetary union than Prime Minister John Major thinks. The situation has been further complicated by former Prime Minister Thatcher who opposes the treaty.
