Still some reasons to be cheerful

Article Abstract:

The Archigram group felt a strong need to be counter-cultural, according to Peter Cook, speaking at the Archigram Symposium in Manchester, England, on Feb 9, 1998. He and Denis Crompton, also one of the group's original members, discussed its work and gave delegates an insight into some of their experiences. The group split up in 1974, but its work, which celebrates science fiction imagery, still seems very modern. It is vital to place Archigram in its proper historical context if its message and importance are to be recognized.

The age-old problem of cool Britannia

Article Abstract:

The Royal Albert Museum in Exeter, England, is staging an exhibition entitled 'Going Modern and Being British: Art, Architecture and Design in Devon 1910-1960.' Devon is still widely regarded as a county of very traditional buildings, but in fact has more flat-roofed Modern Movement houses than any other English county except Surrey. Within the Modern Movement, Devon is most well known for the Dartington Experiment, which began in 1925. This represented the Modern as an entire project, rather than just an isolated building.
