Stirring

Article Abstract:

Tabare Vazquez has performed well in Uruguayan opinion polls prior to elections. He heads the Broad Front coalition, and the opposing parties are the Colorados and Blancos, which have similar policies, and which attract family loyalties passed down over generations. The two parties could field a single candidate, and Jose Battle y Ordonez is a possible candidate. Uruguay faces a recession, which increases the appeal of the Broad Front. The pragmatic socialism of the Broad Front may mean that there is lttle change in terms of economic policy.

India's begrudging voters

Article Abstract:

The Indian elections of Sep and Oct 1999 have led to a victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and allies, but the BJP will depend more on those allies since its share of the seats has been reduced. There was no clear cut philosophy of government offered by any party excpet those on the political left. The coalition could encounter problems, and one member from Haryana, is seeking the reversal of a rise in diesel prices. Members of the alliance argue that there will be cohesion due to fear of having to have a new election.

Chavez hits the ground running

Article Abstract:

Hugo Chavez was elected in a landslide victory to become Venezuela's president in Dec 1998. Low petroleum prices and difficult world markets have hurt the country's economy. Chavez has sought to establish good relations with foreign investors and proposed Venezuela as a candidate for membership of the Latin American trade organization, Mercosur. He emphasises a pragmatic approach, and market pressure does not permit any alternative.
