Strong-arm tactics: a wrestler turns freelance diplomat to spread goodwill beyond the ring
Article Abstract:
Kanji 'Antonio' Inoki is a wrestler and one of Japan's best-known sports figures. He was born in Japan in 1943, but spent his early life as a sugar-cane worker in Brazil, where his family emigrated to escape poverty. While in Brazil, he was spotted by Japanese pro-wrestling professional Rikidozan and was persuaded to return to Japan to compete against foreign wrestlers. Following a successful wrestling career, Inoki turned to politics and became head of the Sports Peace Party in 1989, but failed to win an election seat in 1995. His latest venture is a 24-hour wrestling channel.

Exporting a surplus
Article Abstract:
Japan's economic restructuring of the early 1990s resulted in Apr 1996 in greater trade with Asia than with the US and Europe combined, and in greater manufacturing abroad than it exports. A growing trade surplus with Asia has offset shrinking surpluses elsewhere, and aggressive investment in overseas manufacturing continues. However, surpluses in Asia will eventually fall as well, thanks to a high yen that makes imports more attractive. Refrigerators, color televisions, and computers are all already dominated by imports.
