Summoned by bricks
Article Abstract:
Julian Harrap is a specialist in the restoration of historic buildings and an expert on bricks. He is concerned at the lack of expertese in many restoration projects and the poor understanding of materials. He recommends many buildings be left until time has removed unwanted finishes. The original bricks should be used whenever possible and architects should take advice from a good bricklayer. When new bricks are to be used, the architect must check samples carefully for variation of appearance. Brickwork should be of high quality, as it was in the original building.

Beautiful Gardens
Article Abstract:
Environmental awareness has had a great impact on garden design and construction, and the potential for using brick in garden settings is often overlooked. Natural materials, such as clay bricks harmonize well with the broader landscape, and the variations in colour and texture adds to their charm. All bricks need to be jointed with mortar and many people realise that soft reclaimed red brick has no frost resistance so they fast deteriorate. Bricks that are frost resistant with low soluble salt content are suitable for most landscape situations.
