Swept along by spin: The New Deal is an admirable project, but New Labour must address its imperfections quickly or risk losing face

Article Abstract:

The New Deal initiative is New Labour's experiment in social and economic policy, but focuses more on the message than the method. It aims to remove the jobless from a cycle of welfare dependency by returning them to the labour market. However there are concerns that the work offered may be so poorly paid that welfare is a better option, and if companies faces difficult trading conditions they could lay off workers rather than take them on. Also companies may axe experienced staff to benefit from the government subsidies for taking on New Dealers.

New Labour, new unions?: New government proposals will make trade union recognition compulsory

Article Abstract:

Labour has been so keen to get on with the business community that they have been criticised by many union activists for ignoring them altogether. Labour promised that people should be free to join or not join a union, so as to promote stable and orderly industrial relations. The promise forms the basis of the Fairness at Work White Paper. The details have led to hostilities between trade unions and business leaders, as unions will probably have to gain the support of 40% of the entire workforce to gain recognition.

The nice man cometh

Article Abstract:

Companies need to behave ethically, for the sake of good organizational spirit, customer relations, positive publicity, and avoidance of legal penalties. A large number of top UK companies appreciate the value of a written ethical code, but this needs to be genuine and not just for the sake of publicity. Ethical investments are performing well because companies considered ethical are better at looking to the future.
