Switzerland gets ready for takeover boom

Article Abstract:

The recent purchase by German concern Preussag, a basic materials and technology concern, of Swiss company Elco Looser, supplier of heating systems and burners, was one of a growing number of public takeovers currently taking place in Switzerland. The Swiss concern had been experiencing operating problems, and this provided Preussag with the ideal opportunity. It is likely that other Swiss companies in similar difficulties will begin to realise that they could become the target of hostile takeover bids, and this may prompt them to actively seek partnership deals.

Utilities on the block

Article Abstract:

Swiss and Austrian utilities are likely to see an increased number of mergers and acquisitions due to privatization, deregulation and restructuring. Austria's energy industry has tended to be sheltered. Distribution and generation are being separated in the elctricity industry, followed by price competition and links to the European grid. German companies are likely to be interested in Austria's electricity industry. Meanwhile, Ascom, a Swiss supplier of telecoms equipment, is undergoing restructuring.

A record number of mergers and acquisitions occurred in Switzerland during 1996. Their average value of 590 million Swiss francs is influenced by the high value merger of pharmaceutical companies Sandoz and Ciba Geigy. Many of the Swiss companies pursuing mergers and acquisitions aimed to make cost savings through economies of scale. They were also encouraged by industry movements resulting from deregulation.
