Taiwan's disaster from below

Article Abstract:

Taiwan was hit by an earthquake on Sep 21 1999, and buildings in the capital, Taipei, were destroyed. Taichung, the third biggest city in Taiwan, was also hit, though the earthquake focused on a remote area where recue work is not easy. Newer buildings were worst affected, and they had been constructed following the relaxation of earthquake safety regulations. Over $3 billion will have to be spent on reconstruction. Memory chip production has been affected by the earthquake. Aid has been offered by a number of countries, including China.

Article Abstract:

The emergence of organized crime in Taiwan has become more obvious with the mass killing of eight people, including Liu Pang-you of the Taoyuan county government. It has been estimated that approximately 10% of national officials have links to gangs, while the rate is even higher on a local level.

Straits of Taiwan: futures exchanges

Article Abstract:

The Singapore Intl Monetary Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange will begin trading futures and options based on Taiwanese stock indexes in Jan 1997. Investors will then have a way to hedge in Taiwan's rollercoaster stockmarket.
