The UK retail market for tea dropped by 0.4% in the period 1994 to 1998 to 131,965.8 tonnes. Sales rose by 13% in value during the same period to 761.7 million pounds sterling. Black standard tea accounted for 92% of volume sales and 86.3% of value sales in 1998. Tea bags accounted for 92.6% of sales by volume and 93.6% by value, with tea bags growing 3.6% in volume terms and 18.5% in value terms in the period 1994 to 1998. Sales of fruit and herbal tea rose by 35.5% in value terms and by 46.6% in volume terms between 1994 and 1998.
