Overdependence on research in academics' careers is producing poorly funded, mediocre research and devalues what should be the institutions' primary purpose, teaching. Research should be concentrated in a few elite colleges, and quality teaching made a priority, with appropriate funding, in the rest.

Former Beijing Youth Daily Pres Cui Enqing was dismissed for running stories deemed unfriendly to the government, such as an investigative piece about contamination in a state-run beverage concern.
