Clinton can have a successful presidency if he remembers that the 1980's reinforced the power of market economies. Free trade will be difficult to attain if he listens to the advice of businessmen, and he should discard the campaign promise of middle class tax cuts.

Pres Clinton's attempts to continue the fast-track authority for completing trade deals included promising Congress more input on negotiations, especially with regard to the issues of employee rights and environmental standards. Approval is expected to be difficult.
