The Czech Republic: brewery activity
Article Abstract:
The brewing industry in the Czech Republic is seeing consolidation following strong performance in 1996. The government is set to approve the sale of a majority stake in Budvar, which has fought off a takeover bid from Anheuser-Busch, but the deal will only go ahead if beer output is increased to 1.35 million hl a year by the end of the 1990s. Bass is believed to be seeking to purchase the 34% stake held by Investicni a Postovni banka in brewery Radegast, and further foreign purchases are likely to take place in 1997.

Coming to terms with its communist past
Article Abstract:
There have been many privatisations in the Czech Republic over the last few years, but they have not succeeded in changing the basis of the country's economy. Voucher-privatised companies tend to lack experience in corporate governance, and have no clear vision of their future development. Under the second phase of privatization, the government hopes to attract sufficient foreign investment to allow newly privatised concerns to establish new manufacturing facilities.
