The Euro: adapt or perish

Article Abstract:

The impact of the single European currency on cross-border merger and acquisition (M&A) activity will probably not be great in the short-term. Companies must certainly prepare European business strategies, but M&A activity is likely to remain largely domestic in the short-term. This situation will change in the longer term as domestic opportunities for cost efficiencies decrease, but regulatory issues will then affect cross-border activity. The European Union has lowered the thresholds for notification thus increasing the uncertainties associated with international M&A.

Continental buyouts come of age

Article Abstract:

The 1997 European buyout market produced the five largest management buyouts (MBO) transactions since 1992. The 930 million pounds sterling sale of General de Sante/General Healthcare by Compagnie Generales des Eaux was the largest MBO in 1997. Markets in France and Germany were very active, with both countries recording their largest buyouts since 1992. Italy's largest deal was the sale of Olivetti's personal computer division for 192 million pounds sterling in 1997. European buyout markets are set to continue expanding in 1998.
