Article Abstract:
Lynn Pan is the daughter of Shanghainese socialites who fled the communist takeover in China in 1949. Her subsequent visit to Shanghai in 1981 for the first time since her childhood led her to write a series of popular books about her childhood memories and post-1980 experiences. She feels that writing has been her salvation since being struck down with encephalitis which resulted her becoming deaf in one ear. She is most well known for her work on the Chinese diaspora.
