The Netherlands' invisible army
Article Abstract:
The large number of temporary workers is one of the key factors driving the Netherlands' impressive productivity growth. At any given time, these 'uitzendkrachten' account for about 2% of the labor force. Temporary employment is so prevalent in the country that temps can be found not only in large metropolitan areas, but in the smallest towns. Apart from the traditional roles as secretaries and telephonists, temps fulfill positions ranging from cooks to surgical nurses. Temping is widely accepted in the country because it is beneficial for both employers and employees. The arrangement serves the needs of workers trying out employers before finally accepting a permanent position. It also gives employers a practical way of filling positions with the right people. The Netherland currently has over 1,500 temp agency offices contributing to the 19 billion European economic unit turnover that the business generates in the EC each year.
