There has been a resurgence in threatened strikes in Britain, but the unions will probably never reach the strength they had before Margaret Thatcher's crackdown on labor in the late 1980s. Trends that kept down strikes worldwide are fading but British law remains strong.

UK Prime Minister John Major proposes a form of privatization of the current pension system. Individuals would contribute to an approved private pension fund and the government would return about nine pounds per week from payroll deductions for this contribution.
