The value of the 1998 UK mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market is expected to top 1995's total value of 68 billion pounds sterling, with 25 billions pounds sterling worth of activity being recorded in the public sector during the first 6-months of 1998, compared with 10.7 billion in the first 6-months of 1997. Commercial Union's 6.8 billion pounds sterling merger with General Accident was the largest UK domestic transaction in the first half of 1998, in a sector which recorded 18.9 billion pounds sterling worth of transactions.

There were 438 mergers and acquisition deals recorded in the first quarter of 1998 in the UK, valued at 16.2 billion pounds sterling. The previous highest valued quarter was in 1995 with 15.8 billion pounds sterling made by 295 deals. There were 249 private deals and 42 public deals, the largest being the sale of Vendome to Financiere Richemont for 1 billion pounds sterling. There were 70 management buyouts recorded in the first quarter of 1998, valued at 2.4 billion pounds sterling.
