Demand, no supply: a fertilizer crisis rocks Khaleda's government
Article Abstract:
An unexpected dearth of fertilizer in Bangladesh has sparked riots among farmers and contributed to the dismissal of several senior government ministers. The country has recently been a net exporter of urea-based fertilizers, but a higher global price for urea led traders to offer a $10-per-ton premium, raising exports and depleting the national stock. That may create a million-ton shortfall in rice production in the year ending in June, 1995. Prime Minister Khaleda Zia accuses vested interests of creating an artificial shortage.

Kibria has embraced a number of economic reforms, including a reduction in taxes, cuts in import duties and incentives for foreign investments.
