The best-laid plans...
Article Abstract:
The proposals of the Bali Turtle Island Development to build a resort on Turtle Island plus an exhibition and research centre dedicated to turtles has led to environmentally-based complaints. The Indonesian Sea Communications Directorate General has complained that an environmental impact study has not been conducted for the project, which could affect a government-funded harbour project. There is also concern about plans to take rocks from a mountain to construct a sea wall round the island which would involve blowing up the mountain, which could also affect tourism.

Forest fire; the biodiversity debate heats up in Asia
Article Abstract:
Southeast Asian countries hope to share in an anticipated bounty as advances in the biological sciences make bioprospecting more profitable, but few have developed much of the necessary legal structure. The second meeting of Convention on Biological Diversity signatories brought 1000 delegates to Jakarta in Nov but resulted in little agreement. Meanwhile, the tropical forests thought to hold tens of billions of dollars worth of genetic and biochemical material remain threatened by forestry, fire, and pollution.

People power; bioprospectors learn to work with indigenous groups
Article Abstract:
Companies that hope to find and commercialize rainforests' genetic resources find that working with indigenous groups can be both trying and rewarding, and the law is often unsettled or vague. Communities that live nearby often have bodies of lore concerning medicinal plants and help to preserve the ecosystem, but some are suspicious of outsiders pirating their heritage. The Philippines require companies to educate and get informed consent from the community, but many people may claim to represent such groups.
