The big squeeze
Article Abstract:
The Australian manufacturing industry is suffering from problems including international competition, aging technology, and a weak domestic economy. A major casualty in this process is Australia's biggest listed company, Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., which will close one of its original steelworks by the end of 1999 with the loss of 2,500 jobs. The Australian economy is increasingly turning towards service industries. This sector has expanded to account for 12% of GDP in 1997, compared to 10% in 1992. The manufacturing sector's share of GDP has contracted from 24% in the 1970s to 16% in 1997.

White noise
Article Abstract:
There were 764 reported cases of racial harassment in Australia between September-October 1996, two times the amount between August-September 1996, according to the Australia Chinese Forum. While racial issues are not unheard of in Australia, there has been a significant increase in the few months up to November 1996, following the attention attracted by the Anti-Asian speech of the new Member of Parliament for Queensland, Pauline Hanson.
