Insurers and bankers may have very complex businesses and the problem may be exacerbated after mergers, which can bring together different computer systems and other arrangements in the new company. Cost savings may be difficult to achieve unless complexity is reduced. Insurers and banks are seeking to standardize operations, but this is a major task. Citibank is seeking to do this, aiming to cut complexity by 75%. Banks can also emphasize variety in relation to only a few features, as Benetton has done in the clothing industry.
