The case for the urban fringe

Article Abstract:

It is recognised that planning on the edge of British towns and cities is rather haphazard. Urban fringe areas are often vandalised, used for dumping, used for leisure and owned in small parcels which makes economic farming difficult. Three case studies show the different uses which can be made. It is suggested that the land can be left undeveloped, or that development could be beneficial if suitable, and that conservation and leisure use could be encouraged.

European city networks: experiments in trans-national urban collaboration

Article Abstract:

City networks in Europe are flourishing, encouraged by the EC. They can link cities geographically near or far, and national and regional areas. Cities with common economic or geographic and social characteristics can be linked. They can be effective in lobbying, and are useful information and research channels. Widening of horizons and starting local projects are two useful functions of these links.

Cities and the environment-is urban living sustainable?

Article Abstract:

The growth of urban living poses problems of population growth and need for resources. Earth's population doubles every 35 years, adding to environmental damage. Sustainable means of living have to be found, as most of the developed world live in cities. Transport systems could be improved to discourage car use.
