Smaller Asia countries are more welcoming of foreign investment than ever before. Protectionist trade policies and local partnership requirements have been mostly dropped. This new strategy benefits provincial areas since investors generally build away from the already congested cities.

Japan is increasing its investments and military presence in Asian countries in anticipation of a gradual US military withdrawal. Japanese exports and factories have quadrupled in the Association of South-East Asian Nations since 1985.
