The Thai government faces domestic pressure over its economic policy, which is seen as successful by international observers. Chuan Leekpai leads a coalition government and his government faces a no-confidence motion which could affect the coalition, even if it is not passed. The unelected Senate is seen as likely to be a bigger problem than the lower house, since the plan for economic recovery depends on the Senate passing 11 bills to promote economic reform. The reform measures have aroused fears and nationalist sentiments in Thailand.

The Thai coalition government set up by Chuan Leekpai with six political parties faces problems with 11 reform bills geared to rescue the economy.
